Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions regarding F-16s:

What is the proposal?
• The Idaho Air National Guard at Gowen Field has been identified as a potential location for the F-16. Not all A-10 units will receive follow-on missions.
• Idaho would receive 18 F-16 jets. This is equal to the number of A-10s currently based at Gowen Field.

Why is there a proposal to bring F-16s to Boise?
• This modernization will better align the Air Force to support the current National Defense Strategy by leveraging the 124th FW’s existing fighter aircraft operations and maintenance expertise
• The 124th FW is considered one of the most competent combat units in the Nation, with a long history of significant contributions to combat deployments in support of U.S. interests.
• In 2017 the 124th Fighter Wing was recognized as the nation’s overall outstanding flying unit in the Air National Guard as a result of recent combat deployment experience in Southwest Asia.
• Gowen Field has been home to nine different fighter aircraft over the past 75-plus years. We want to ensure our long-standing tradition and culture of flying fighter aircraft carries on into the future.

Would F-16s impact our community and environment?
• The Idaho Air National Guard has been a fixture in Boise since 1946. Our pilots have been flying fighters for over 75 years, transitioning through nine different aircraft types. With each new aircraft, we modify our noise abatement procedures to mitigate the impacts of jet noise on the community, ensuring Boise remains as livable as it always has.
• Idaho National Guardsmen share an appreciation for the quality of life we all enjoy here in Idaho. We live, work, recreate and raise our families here. We are a part of our community and are committed to keeping Idaho a great place to live.

How often will F-16s take off and land at Boise?
• Our flying schedules result in roughly 10 minutes of audible jet noise per day- five minutes around 10:30 a.m. when 4-6 jets depart to the training space, and again around 2 p.m. when another 4-6 jets depart.
• We average about 12 flights per day.

Would F-16s fly supersonic near my home?
• Aircraft will not be supersonic over Boise.
• Supersonic flight is highly regulated by the FAA and only allowed in certain areas. The nearest area to Boise is roughly 50 miles to the south and aircraft must be above 10,000 feet.

Would F-16s use afterburners on takeoff?
• The F-16s generally have the option to use an afterburner on takeoff, as it provides a margin of safety to the pilot.
• Unless required for an emergency, the afterburner would be terminated before the end of the runway on takeoff.

Are F-16s Safe?
• The F-16 is a capable and safe aircraft and F-16 data shows very low mishap rates.
• Flight maneuver training would continue to occur in areas away from population centers with no significant impacts on the local community.
