Director of Staff – Idaho Air National Guard

Col Kyle E. Carpenter is the Director of Staff, Joint Forces Headquarters, Idaho Air National Guard. He serves as the principal advisor to the Adjutant General and/or Assistant Adjutant on a broad range of matters concerning the United States Air Force and Air National Guard. Col Carpenter is the Chief Executive Officer responsible for the diversified functions including Logistics, Information Systems, Manpower and Personnel, Public Affairs, Recruiting and Retention, 266th Range Squadron, and medical and State emergency responses. He coordinates with the Idaho Army National Guard senior leadership on joint programs and activities within the State of Idaho. He also coordinates special Air National Guard programs and initiatives, such as Diversity, Family Support, Employer Support and National Guard Bureau State Partnership Programs. Col Carpenter also oversees the development, execution and evaluation of programs and policies pertaining to the command, control and operation of the Idaho Air National Guard.

Col Carpenter was commissioned into the Active Duty Air Force in May of 1995 after graduating from the US Air Force Academy. He next served 8 years in the active duty, flying C-130’s at Pope Air Force Base and Little Rock AFB, as an instructor navigator. He completed his active duty service while at Little Rock AFB and transitioned to the Idaho Air National Guard in January of 2003 where he joined the 189th Airlift Squadron. He subsequently became a C-130 pilot in the unit and, in 2008, transferred to the 190th Fighter Squadron to fly the A-10. Col Carpenter has deployed in support of operations JOINT FORGE, SOUTHERN WATCH, IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM.

Col Carpenter served as the commander, 124th Operational Support Squadron. In 2016, he departed Idaho for Maryland where he served on the Headquarters ANG Air Staff as a combat Air Forces Programmer in A8 and as the Branch chief of Combatant Commanders Exercises and International Affairs in A3 in the ANG Readiness Center at Andrews AFB. Col Carpenter is a Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering within the state of Idaho. He has worked as an engineer for the Idaho Army National Guard for the last 12 years and is currently their chief of environmental management. Prior to his current position, the Col was the Chief of Wing Plans for the 124 FW.
