Command Sergeant Major to the Joint Staff of the Idaho Army National Guard

Command Sergeant Major Hoffenbacker joined the Idaho Army National Guard on 26 October 1988. He attended Basic Training at Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri. Six months later he returned to Ft. Leonardwood to complete Advanced Individual Training to graduate with a 12 Series MOS. His first assignment upon returning to Idaho was as a Combat Engineer and an Armored Vehicle Launch Bridge (AVLB) driver for the 129th Engineers in Rigby, Idaho.

Throughout his 34 years of service he has served in Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and HHB of the 1-148th FA, Golf Company, 145th BSB. He served in every enlisted leadership position from Combat Engineer, Firefighter in Driggs Idaho, Ammo Team Chief, Section Chief, Gunnery Sergeant, First Sergeant in Bravo and Headquarters Battery 148th FA, CSM in 1-148th FAR, and a three-year title10 tour as CSM of the Warrior Transition Battalion in Ft Bliss, TX to his current position as Joint Staff Sergeant Major Idaho National Guard in Boise. SGM Hoffenbacker’s military education includes 3 different Military Occupational Specialties and completion of all NCOES courses.
SGM Hoffenbacker has 2 deployments to Iraq with the 116th Cavalry Brigade. In 2004 he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III and in 2010 in support of Operation New Dawn.

His awards and decorations include: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with 2 bronze oakleaf clusters), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (with 1 silver 1 bronze oakleaf clusters), Army Good Conduct Medal (with bronze clasp 2 knots), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (with 4 bronze oakleaf clusters), National Defense Service Medal (with 1 star), Iraq Campaign Medal (with 2 campaign stars), Global War on Terror Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Gold Hourglass (with “M” device), Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Developement Ribbon with Numeral 5, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon (with Numeral 2), Idaho Emergency Duty Ribbon (with 1 bronze oakleaf clusters), Idaho Reenlistment Ribbon (with 1 silver and 2 bronze oakleaf clusters) Idaho Recruiting Ribbon, Idaho Service Ribbon (with 1 silver oakleaf clusters), Meritorious Unit Commendation, Idaho Governor’s Outstanding Unit Award.

SGM Hoffenbacker is a graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy and is a small business owner. He resides in Idaho Falls with his wife Kim, his two boys Alex and Lance and 2 grand-children Robert and Jamie.
